Near millions of dong a kilogram of channel imported from the US

This is a new type of snail imported by many seafood stores in Ho Chi Minh City on Tet holiday this year to submit to high -end seafood lovers. They are sold by the stores at a fairly expensive price, ranging from 850,000-950,000 VND per kg.

According to Mr. Tran Van Truong, Hoang Gia Seafood CEO, Channel Oc is imported directly from the US in limited quantities. During this 2025 Tet service, the company brought in 2 tons, but most of them were reserved by customers.

“This snail is not only crispy, large size but also suitable to eat raw thanks to the rich taste and typical aroma,” Mr. Truong said.

In Vietnam, it is not easy to find snails. At a seafood shop on Nguyen Van Linh Street, District 7, the staff said the channel is always in a state of “sold out.” Customers often have to order 2-3 days in advance to receive the goods.

According to imported stores, the price of this snail is high from many factors. First, the supply is scarce, only some units can import to Vietnam. Next, the international shipping cost and strict storage process also contributed to pushing the price of snails up. In particular, in the US, Channel is considered a luxurious dish, often appearing in luxurious parties. The shell with elegant colors, pear shape is also used as a decoration, increasing value.

This snail has the scientific name of Busycotypus Canaliculatus, also known as Channeled Whelk. This is the largest species of San Francisco Bay and the only representative in the Busycotypus family living along the Pacific coast. They often live in shallow sand and tidal areas, and operate mainly at night. The shell is light gray or light brown, smooth surface and beautiful spiral.

Snail meat is low in fat, is the ideal choice for high -end dishes. In the US, this snail is usually processed and sold in part, with prices from 500,000 to 3 million depending on the location. Thanks to the brittle, fat, this snail quickly won the hearts of gourmets in Vietnam.
