Ryanair opens four new routes at Charleroi airport, again no growth in Zaventem

The Irish airline Ryanair will open four new routes during the summer season from Charleroi airport. That was announced on Wednesday during a press conference in Brussels. In Zaventem there is again no growth due to “the high costs”, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said.

Ryanair will offer a total of 132 routes to and from Belgium during the summer. “A record,” said O’Leary. The growth comes from Charleroi airport, with four new destinations: Katowice (Poland), Volos (Greece) and the Italian cities of Rome (Fiumicino) and Salero. Ryanair will also fly more often on forty routes, such as Dubrovnik (Croatia), Faro (Portugal), Marseille (France) and the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Ryanair is not growing again at Brussels Airport. “We are not going to develop further because the airport continues to impose too high aviation taxes, while the passenger numbers are not yet at the level of for the Corona Pandemie,” O’Leary denounced.

Zaventem airport is not the only one in the sights of the Ryanair CEO. Other European airports, especially in Germany, France and the United Kingdom, are too expensive, according to him. “Those taxes are detrimental to the growth of the airports,” he said.

O’Leary also sent a series of requirements to the European Commission during the press conference. “We call on to reform the European air traffic control system, because it leads to many delays. We also want a reform of current taxes, such as the environmental taxes, which disadvantage European passengers compared to other passengers on longer flights, “said the Ryanair CEO.
