Lower production and higher corn import

Mexico closed 2024 with the worst corn production in a decade and with unprecedented levels in the importation of that grain, and despite the actions currently undertaken by the Government to encourage its harvest, it is expected that in 2025 the production continues to fall and the Purchase from other countries continue to increase.

Estimates of the Agricultural Market Consulting Group (GCMA) point out that this year Mexico will have a production of 21 million 710 thousand tons of corn, which will represent a drop of 5.61 percent compared to 23 million tons with which the year was closed past.

Of the total production by 2025, around 19 million 30 thousand tons are expected Birds and cattle, and in the industry for food development).

According to the agency, the consumption of corn in Mexico, counting people, industry and animals, will be 47.5 million tons.

The country is practically self -sufficient in which it concerns white corn, that is, the one that is used for the preparation of tortillas, food that consumes more than 90 percent of the population; However, it is far from satisfying the 27,920 tons of yellow corn that the industry will demand this year.

For this reason, estimates the GCMA, Mexico will import yellow corn, mainly transgenic in the United States, for around 25 million 820 thousand tons, which will represent an increase of 9.4 percent compared to the historical amount of 23 million 600 thousand tons reported in 2024 .

Last Wednesday, the Mexican government reversed the restrictions imposed on transgenic corn imports, this in compliance with the failure of the controversy solution panel that lost at the end of last year against the United States in the framework of (T-MEC) .

In this way, the decree published on February 13, 2023 was without effect, in which the country prohibited the import of genetically modified corn, used for human consumption, which was sought to replace with greater production, which has not been achieved .

With that determination, said Juan Carlos Anaya, General Director of GCMA, affectations in the supply and inflationary pressures are prevented due to the reduction in the production of white corn in 2025, caused by drought, which has prevented the self -sufficiency achieved Since 1994.

President Claudia Shein-Baum last Wednesday to the Congress of the Union that installs work tables to analyze the constitutional project that seeks to prohibit the planting of transgenic corn in Mexico.
