Electric network: a plan at 100 billion euros, no “short -term” consequences on prices

The amount is colossal. The investment plan to renew or strengthen 40,000 km of high -voltage lines in France by 2040 amounts to 100 billion euros. It will result in short -term limited consequences on the French electricity bill, says RTE this Thursday.

This unprecedented investment plan for half a century should allow France to renew its electrical network, to adapt it to increasingly extreme climatic hazards and to support the decarbonation of the economy. This will result in greater production and greater consumption of electricity to get out of 2050 of dependence on imported and costly fossil fuels for trade balance.

An investment amortized over 40 years

Between February 2022 and February 2024, the average invoice of a household at the regulated rate, the retail market, increased by 44 % due to the energy crisis which brought up the prices of electricity on the wholesale markets .

RTE would like to reassure: “In the short term, there is no consequence of investments in network prices, the damping of investments is done over time”, over around 40 years. So that future consumers will pay the use of these networks which transport electricity from production plants.

RTE indicates that after having decreased in recent years, “the share of the transport network in the retail price should increase slightly”. “However,” explains the manager, “the electricity transport network is today a minority component of the regulated sales rate (7 % in 2025) and will remain it”.
