Unfair treatment of the USA? Trump makes you serious and enacts against tariffs

US President Donald Trump continues to intensify his course in trade policy and issues as announced Counter -tariff. The Republican signed a corresponding arrangement on Thursday. Customs on vehicles should come soon, Trump said to journalists. The retaliation tariffs aimed to restore equal opportunities.

Other countries could lower or abolish their tariffs. It would not be accepted to send goods by another country to avoid tariffs, added Trump.

Trump had recently ordered tariffs for steel and aluminum. The European Union announced a reaction to this. “Immediate tariffs at the expense of the EU will not remain unanswered – they will result in decisive and proportionate countermeasures,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen last Tuesday. How the measures will be concrete remained open for the time being.

“Correct trade inequality”

In principle, mutual, so -called reciprocal tariffs mean that the United States raised tariffs wherever you are currently asking less than your trading partners. In the past, Trump had emphasized that they wanted to correct the retail weight with these tariffs and accused other countries of treating the United States unfairly.

The White House made it clear in advance to target other trade barriers. This included taxes for American companies such as VAT, state subsidies or regulations that prevented US companies from doing business abroad.

Trump open for negotiations

The new tariffs will not come into force immediately. Instead, the responsible authorities have 180 days to identify the affected states and impose country -specific tariffs on this basis, as a high -ranking consultant Trump said. The countries are first taken with the highest trade deficit. The countries concerned are invited to negotiate with US President Trump in order to avert the US tariffs. However, tariffs could come into force even before the deadline, the advisor said. The authorities would work at “Trump Tempo”.

The Trump consultant emphasized that it does not matter whether the planned tariffs are not whether it is strategic competitors such as China or allies such as the European Union or Japan or Korea. “For many years, the United States have been treated unfairly by their trading partners, whether friend or enemy,” says the order. The trade deficit threatens the national security of the United States.

Trouble in the White House via VAT in EU countries

The US government again referred to cars when it comes to trade deficit with the European Union. Trump is regularly angry about the import tariffs. Customs of 2.5 percent are due on the way to the USA – but 10 percent on the way to Europe. But with the pickups and commercial vehicles popular in the USA, for example, the US tariffs are much higher.

However, the high -ranking government representative also emphasized that in Washington they are also annoyed by VAT, which is also subject to auto imports from the USA. This varies depending on the EU member state – it is 20 percent in Austria.

The fact that the largest European economy Germany sells significantly more cars to the USA than the other way around is certainly not due to a lack of “American craftsmanship or quality,” said the high -ranking government advisor. That is mercantilism. “President Trump will no longer accept that.”

The customs differences with the European Union see experts in most areas rather than small. The big exception is the agricultural area, where the EU tariffs are sometimes significantly higher than in the USA – especially on dairy products, meat and sugar or poultry. Different standards and import specifications must also be observed here. Textiles and clothing from the United States are usually subject to somewhat higher tariffs in Europe than the other way around – but the difference is sometimes minor. The other way around, tariffs on plastics, chemicals, works of art and antiques in the United States are sometimes higher than in the European Union.

Customs as a means of pressure

Experts assume that the United States would be hardest by far -reaching compensatory tariffs should actually come into force – and not be averted in advance. US companies are likely to change the higher costs to consumers – this heats up inflation.

Nevertheless, Trump always relies on tariffs. He also uses the punishment as a means of pressure to achieve political success in negotiations with other countries.

At the beginning of February, a North American trade war with uncertain consequences for the global economy could be averted. Trump was only a few hours before the fellows that were threatened to come into force in the amount of 25 percent on goods from Mexico and Canada, especially when it comes to concessions from the neighbors. For this he pushed the trade restrictions on for at least 30 days. In contrast, new tariffs against China remained in force.
