European green light for lifetime extension Doel 4 and Tihange 3

On Friday, the European Commission set the light on the extension of the lifespan of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear reactors, if a few adjustments consider the committee to support the support of the Belgian State in accordance with the European rules.

The previous Belgian government of Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and ENGIE had reached an agreement at the end of 2023 to extend the lifespan of the two reactors by ten years until at the latest 2037. The deal with the French energy giant rotates the planned core exit and has to enter the electricity supplying Guarantee Belgium for the next ten years.

Last summer, the committee started an investigation into the state aid that provides the agreement and its impact on the electricity market. Among other things, she looked at the price guarantee for the electricity from the reactors, the fixed amount of 15 billion euros for the storage of nuclear waste and the establishment of a joint venture with electricrabel.

The committee now comes to the conclusion that the support is “necessary”, “proportional” and “limited to the strictly necessary”, it is in a press release on Friday. Belgium had to do a number of adjustments in exchange. For example, the joint venture had to transfer part of its decision -making power to an independent energy manager and the mechanism for the price guarantee had to be adjusted.
