Fiscus wants to collect 1.17 billion euros in taxes multinationals: record amount

In 2024, the tax authorities registered 1.17 billion euros in avoided taxes from multinationals who have not declared their Belgian profits correctly. This is evident from figures about which L’Echo and De Tijd on Wednesday report. A small number of files are responsible for most of the total.

The administration of large companies of the Federal Public Service Finance, and more specifically the cell set -off prices, has had an exceptional year. In 2024, the Department registered a record amount of 1.17 billion euros in taxes that still have to be paid by large companies that have not not indicated their Belgian profits correctly.

Of that record amount, 981 million comes from ‘exceptional files’. These are taxes that were avoided in the 2022 and 2023 assessment years and of which the treatment in some cases lasted up to 18 months. The sum that wants to recover the tax authorities’ tax authorities is four times higher than in 2023. Then the total amount amounted to 262 million euros.

Large companies

It is unknown which multinationals the Belgian tax authorities are following. What we do know is that the exceptional amount of 981 million euros can be attributed to a very limited number of large companies. Given the size of the regularization, the companies involved should most likely mention this in their annual accounts.

Companies that are imposed on a tax increase after the increase in their profits can challenge that decision.
