The employed population reached 59.44 million in January; More than half, in informality

The labor occupation in Mexico increased in January 2025, promoted by the creation of informal employment and the primary sector, composed of agriculture, livestock, forestry, hunting and fishing, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

According to the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), which the INEGI performs, it was estimated that the population occupied in the country amounted to 59.44 million people in January 2025, which represented a growth of 123 thousand 446 jobs with respect to last December. Female employment was the most affected, with a loss of 459 thousand 108 jobs; while in the male 582 thousand 554 rose.

This behavior was explained almost mostly by that of employment in the primary sector, by adding 524 thousand 858 people in January more in their sequential measurement, led by the male places, which increased by 495 thousand 552 job positions monthly in January; while the female squares only rose in 29 thousand 306.

In the secondary sector, the industry, 120 thousand 367 jobs were destroyed in January compared to December. For services, the tertiary, 193 thousand 658 places fell.

In Mexico, 32.20 million people were occupied in informality at the end of January 2025, 371 thousand 973 more compared to December.

The formal occupation amounted to 27.25 million people, 248 thousand 527 less in its monthly measurement.

The labor informality rate was located at 54.2 percent in the first month of 2025. In the same month of 2024, it was 54.1 percent.

Unemployment rate

The unemployment rate stood at 2.7 percent, so it added 27 months below 3 percent. In the same month of 2024, it was 2.9 percent.

The suboccupation rate (percentage of employed population that sought to offer a greater amount of working time in its current occupation or in additional employment) was set at 6.9 percent. In the first month of 2024, it was 7.1 percent.

In its annual measurement, the occupied population showed a growth of 532 thousand 710 people. According to sex, the occupation of women was 24.2 million and that of men, of 35.3 million: the annual rise in them was 403 thousand and in them, 130 thousand.
