French supermarket chain Casino dismisses 2,200 people

Due to the previously announced restructuring at the French supermarket chain Casino, 2,200 people are eventually fired. Philippe Palazzi, the general manager of the group, announced this on Friday when announcing the annual figures.

Casino had already announced last year that more than 3,000 jobs would disappear. A solution could be found internally for a thousand employees, but a large number of employees are still shown the door. “Almost ninety percent” of the dismissals have since been communicated to the employees involved, reports Palazzi.

The French supermarket chain has had financial difficulties for some time. A year ago, the creditors and shareholders had approved a rescue plan, which means that the group is now in the hands of the billionaires Daniel Kretinsky and Marc Ladreit the Lachgarder, supported by the Investment Fund Intestor.

Last year’s net loss of the group was reduced to 295 million euros, after 5.7 billion euros was dived into red in 2023. The turnover figure fell by 5.4 percent to 8.5 billion euros. The results of Casino are “still firmly drawn by the past difficulties,” says Palazzi.

Casino has already sold its hypermarkets – more than 300 – but also opened 268 new stores in 2024 with “the right location, the right franchisee and the right brand”.
