Future airline Air Belgium again uncertain

At the end of last year it became known that Air Belgium would continue its cargo activities under the name Air One Belgium. The company would be taken over by the Dutch Peso Aviation Management and the British Air One Holding International through a transfer under judicial authority.

However, the file has been delayed and the manager of the procedure has submitted a request to the court to possibly terminate the transfer. A special works council will also take place at Air Belgium on Wednesday.

The airline had announced in September 2023 to stop its passenger flights, to South Africa and Mauritius, because those operations were “chronically loss-making”. Around 11,000 passengers had booked another flight at that time. Air Belgium was then placed in a judicial reorganization and then in transfer under judicial authority.

In December, the business court of Nivelles had the light on green for the acquisition of the cargo activities. In addition, 197 of the 401 employees would remain on board. According to the planning at the time, the restart was planned for the end of March or the beginning of April. Air One Belgium would then operate with four cargo devices from Brussels Airport.

But the procedure has been delayed. According to Air Belgium, a number of important points have been delayed or not yet resolved. “Through his request, the manager wants to make it clear that he is concerned that Air One could not complete the second phase within the permitted and desired term.” The transferee must respond to that request. “At the moment there are no indications that Air One will not take the necessary measures to ensure the manager and the court that the transfer will indeed be brought to a successful conclusion,” concludes the Walloon Aviations.
