War in Ukraine: why the Eutelsat Group satellites are credible but fragile starlinky substitutes

Secure an alternative in the event of disengagement from American technologies. Faced with the potential rupture of satellite internet access provided by Starlink, Ukraine is only eyeing the already operational European constellation, Eutelsat. The Franco-British satellite operator is already taking charge of Ukrainian government communications and is in discussion with European institutions. Objective: to deploy more internet connections terminals to relay the signals of these Oneweb satellites positioned in orbit at 450 km.

Vital for its military and civil communications in the war against Russia, Internet connections via Starlink remain subject to the goodwill of the Trump administration and the managers of a quasi-monopoly company. On his X network (ex-Twitter), Elon Musk was still blowing hot and cold this weekend: “I simply want to say that without Starlink, Ukrainian networks would collapse since the Russians can mud all the other communication channels! But we would never do it or use it as a means of negotiation. ”
