Trump Amagos shoot Tequila exports

Tequila exports in Mexico shot in the first month of 2025, according to official data, in the middle of the series of tariff threats Donald Trump has made since his campaign began and that they have already intensified as president of the United States, the main market of that Mexican drink.

Mexican Tequila sales – one of the agri -food jewels of Mexico – were located, according to figures from the Bank of Mexico (BDEM), at 363 million dollars in January 2025, an increase of 29.1 percent compared to the 281 million dollars reported in the same period of 2024.

Historically, tequila is usually the second agri -food product that most exports Mexico to the world (mostly to the United States), only behind beer.

BDEM data show that in 2024 Mexico Tequila exports registered a value of 4,280 million dollars, which meant a 3.3 percent drop compared to 2023; Even so, it was the best -selling agroal food in the country, only below the 6,722 million dollars that beers represented that same year.

Tequila exports show data from the Central Bank, grew four times more compared to 7 percent to which the total agrifood products during January 2025 did.

Recently, Luis Fernando Haro, president of the National Agricultural Council, said that there had been a greater increase in the expected in Mexican exports to the United States, just days that Donald Trump assumed the presidency of the US (January 20), threatening with general tariffs from the first day to Mexico and Canada, which did not happen, since they have been postponed.

According to estimates by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), the collection of a 25 percent tariff on Mexican exports to the US, as President Donald Trump planned, would cause US consumers to pay around 836 million extra dollars for imports of said drink that has a denomination of origin in Jalisco, that is, they could not replace their importation with local product.

It will be on April 2 when EU releases whether 25 percent general tariffs apply to Mexico, after March 5 postponed them for a month after a conversation between Trump and President Claudia Sheinbaum.
