Crisis -proof? The economic situation of the hairdressers in Austria

Numerous divisions complain about economically difficult times, payment tired customers and challenging conditions. It is different with the hairdressing chain Clip where as the market leader you are happy about the vanity of the Austrians and a stable customer base. Is there a reason for joy in smaller companies?

Overall picture of the industry

It’s not that simple. At Klipp as an established hairdresser giant, it is summed up that customers can be kept successfully. Of course there were ups and downs in the numbers, but that has always been the case. However, Klipp’s business data are not representative of the entire industry. 98 percent of all hairdressers have loud Chamber of Commerce No up to a maximum of nine employees. The one in the Klipp family company belongs with its round 1,300 employees in 160 salons to the largest hairdressing shops in Austria.

The economic situation is somewhat different for the smaller hairdressing companies: higher material and energy costs, lack of staff and increased rental prices strain the business. WKO federal guild master Wolfgang Eder emphasizes that the high wage costs in particular burden smaller hairdressers: “The biggest problem is wages.” It does not work to pass on the additional expenses to the same level to customers in times of low -cost hairdressers.

Barbershops compete with hairdressers

Every third hairdresser with Employee is now a hairdresser guild Barbershop – A total of 1,200 throughout Austria. Barbershops are men’s hairdressers who also offer facial and beard care. The operators advertise with speed and small prices, because a machine cut often only takes 15 minutes and often only costs ten euros. Klipp managing director Gottfried Kraft takes this with humor, because “the competition prevents MA from using fat”, but it is important that it is worked on fair conditions. Cheap hairdressers most recently noticed by investigating the financial police. With 34 companies examined, 29 violations were found.

New service potential

Uncertain times require flexibility. The majority of the hairdressing companies earn their money through four services: coloring, cutting, styling and care. Now the hairdressing industry reacts with new offers, such as the Scalp and hair analysis. The aim of this offer is to determine which hair care and styling products are ideal for your own hair. The scalp plays an essential role.

Ewald Lanzl, Company founder From Klipp, Compare: “A healthy scalp is as important for beautiful hair as a good earth for beautiful flowers.” In the scalp analysis, it is checked whether it is scaly, red, sensitive or inconspicuous. Based on this knowledge, hairdressers recommend suitable hair products for the customer.

Men more often in the salon than women

On the whole, the industry should not complain. Eder states: “As a industry, we get through quite well.” Especially compared to other economic sectors. A current Market study shows that more than half of the Austrian population go to the hairdresser at least once a quarter. Men are particularly often made: 70 percent go to the hairdresser at least once in a quarter of a year and spend an average of 35 euros.

Less regularly women visit the hair salon, but pay more than twice as much money. This can be explained by the more expensive wishes of many women. Color hair, extend or elaborately style it just costs more Money to shorten the side hair.
