The Jerusalem Municipal Commission approved the plan for the construction of the housing and commercial complex on the former Banquet Hall “Versailles” in the industrial zone of Talpiyot.
The place of the tragedy, in which 23 people were killed in 2001 and another 380 were injured, has since been desolate.
The new plan provides for the construction of a 24-storey building, most of which will occupy a hotel with a banquet hall. Part of the building will be given to residential apartments, office and retail premises.
Recall that on May 24, 2001, in the Jerusalem Hall of the celebrations “Versailles”, which was in the Talpiot area, there was a disaster: as a result of the collapse of the floor of the upper (third) floor, 23 people who came to weddings were killed, more than 400 were injured. It was the largest “household disaster” in the history of Israel. The investigation showed that the cause of the tragedy was an unauthorized removal of a number of columns that supported the floor of the third floor during the repair of the building.
