In line with the purpose of achieving energy self -sufficiency, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported last February the slightest importation of gasoline in the last four years, while the refining in that same month averaged its second best level since March 2017, according to the company’s figures.

At the end of February, the importation of gasoline averaged 277 thousand barrels per day, a decrease of 32.7 percent or a reduction of 135 thousand barrels per day compared to the 412 thousand reported in the same month last year.

The figure to February is the lowest for a single month since March 2021, when an average import of 240 thousand barrels per day was recorded, according to figures that are available in the PEMEX institutional database.

Energy self -sufficiency is that most of the energy that are consumed in a country is produced by itself, and is one of the most ambitious goals that the government of the fourth transformation has been raised.

On Thursday, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo presented 18 points to strengthen the Mexico Plan, which was called a roadmap To improve the economy and well -being of Mexican families, and in it he reiterated the purpose of achieving self -sufficiency.

Between 2025 and 2030, the national production of gasoline, diesel and less polluting turbosine will increase by at least 30 percentsaid the head of the Mexican Executive on Thursday.

The figures seem to indicate that the achievement of these objectives is advancing as planned, since in February the elaboration of gasoline in the National Refining System (SNR) averaged 334 thousand barrels per day, an increase of 7.7 percent or 24 thousand barrels per day if compared to the 310 thousand barrels reported in February last year.

The fuel elaboration figure in the SNR for the second month of the year was the second best since March 2017, that is, in almost eight years, since at that time the average was 335 thousand barrels per day. In the third month of 2024 the average stood at 350 thousand barrels per day.

If, on average, during February, the volume of gasoline sales reported by Pemex was 631 thousand barrels per day, almost half of the gasoline consumed in the country occur here and the other half come from abroad, according to company data.

This constitutes an advance on the way to energy self -sufficiency, if it is considered that one year before the start of the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 70 percent of the gasoline that were consumed in the country came from abroad.

Gasoline production has increased from 2023 to date. This has allowed to reduce imports and is the product of Pemex’s efforts aimed at rehabilitating the SNR, of course, but until now almost half of the gasoline that are consumed in Mexico come from abroadArturo Carranza, analyst of the energy sector, raised.
