The EU hopes to end the trade war with the United States during the 90 -day customs.

Trade Commissioner Maroš Shefčovič will travel to Washington on Monday to negotiate a limited trade agreement.

If negotiations fail, the EU is considering retaliation, such as taxing American digital companies’ advertising revenue.

EU hopes that the US President Donald Trump The promised 90 -day deferral of the entry into force of customs could result in a decision -making agreement in the trade war.

EU Finance ministers met on Friday in Warsaw, and the main messages of the meeting were that the EU wants to use the respite to find a negotiating solution. EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič travel to Washington as early as Monday.

Target It is ambitious, because typically trade negotiations last for years. The EU and the United States’ previous negotiations on the trade and investment agreement ended in an unsuccess of Trump’s first presidential term. In those negotiations, it was supposed to agree on the calculation of customs duties and to relieve many other barriers to trade, for example by harmonizing regulation.

Now, the Commission offers a narrower trade agreement to the United States, which would commit to the parties to remove imported duties for industrial products such as chemicals and plastics. In addition, the EU has offered more energy and defense equipment from the United States.

It is unclear whether this is enough for Trump. The administration believes that the EU will make it difficult for American companies to compete in other ways, and has targeted, among other things, VAT and digital and food regulation.

EU Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis says the EU is also ready to discuss cooperation with the United States in regulation.

Chairman Ursula von der Leyen however warned In an interview with Financial Timesthat the United States should not expect the EU to lower its standards.

Von der Leyen also stressed that the negotiating solution must be equal and benefit from both parties.

Europe It is prepared that there is no such agreement and the Commission will continue to prepare counter -action. Von der Leyen said that if negotiations fall, the EU may hit the US service exports, for example by taxing digital companies’ advertising revenue.

In Warsaw, however, ministers and commissioners stressed that the EU did not want to escape the trade war.

“We will continue to demonstrate restraint. We do not want to nourish exceptional uncertainty,” says Dombrovskis.

The Commission estimates that Trump’s duties would hit the economic growth in the United States than in Europe. If duties come into effect, they could slow down US economic growth by more than 3 %.

Trump Notification for 90 days of deferrals is only partial. It only applies to 20 % of the 20 % announced last week and does not completely remove them. The general seats only fall to 90 days to 10 %. Previous 25 % duties for steel, aluminum and cars remain valid.

Spain has already suggested that states may have to support companies that are in difficulty due to customs. For this reason, Italy has wished exceptions to the debt rules.

Some EU countries are afraid of disturbing the internal market as companies in one country receive support for others, as they did in the midst of corona pandemic.

“I wouldn’t want to see racing in supporting businesses. Europe should prefer to focus on product development and future sectors,” says Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski.

The Ministry of Finance Secretary of State at the meeting Riikka Slunga-Poutsalo Describe Friday’s debate as exceptionally unanimous.

“Europe can only do it uniform. Individual detachments do not serve anyone.”
