At a plenary meeting of the Knesset, a bill regulating the conditions for the purchase of social housing was approved by a majority vote. The bill was put forward by deputies Naama Lazimi, Michael Biton, Yanon Azoulay, Keti Shitrit, Aryeh Deri, Eliyahu Revivo, Yosef Tayeb and others.
Under the bill, a person who has legally lived in a public housing unit for five years and does not own or have a close relative own the apartment or other real estate, or is the spouse, child, or parent of a soldier killed in action, will have the right to purchase the apartment in which he or she resides at the price and under the terms established by the bill.
The price will be set by the state appraiser based on the price that could be received from the sale of the apartment, minus an amount that will depend on the number of people living in the apartment and the area where it is located.
The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Housing oppose the law.
