Vietnam’s digital economy is expected to reach 39 billion USD this year

The information was given by Deputy Director of E-commerce and Digital Economy, Ministry of Industry and Trade Hoang Ninh at the 2025 Industry and Trade Industry Digital Transformation Forum, December 3.

According to Mr. Ninh, this year e-commerce continues to be the main growth driver, with a scale of about 25 billion USD, accounting for 10% of total retail sales of consumer goods and services.

Along with that, digital transformation in industry – smart manufacturing also helped the index of industrial production (IIP) increase by 8.4%, the highest level in 5 years. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, about 90% of processing and manufacturing enterprises partially deploy digital solutions, 35% apply robots and sensors in production, and 10-12% reach smart factory level 3.0.

Thanks to changes in the digital economy, the Ministry of Industry and Trade estimates the scale of this field to reach 39 billion USD this year, among the fastest growing in the region.

At the forum, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan assessed that the digital economy continues to improve, becoming a new pillar to help increase productivity, expand markets and the resilience of the economy.

According to Ms. Dang Thuy Trang, External Affairs Director of Grab Vietnam, digital platforms are becoming important tools to support local digital economic development. Providing a multi-service ecosystem helps meet people’s daily needs, while promoting digital transformation in the fields of tourism, heritage promotion, culture and cuisine.

However, besides the growth opportunities of the digital economy, this field also faces the risk of cyber fraud. Ms. Nguyen Nhu Quynh, Co-Founder and Operations Director of the Anti-Fraud Organization, warned of the increased risk of cyber attacks such as fake emails and partner information to change payment terms and cross-border trade fraud.

Along with that, in the context of rapid development of AI technology, new forms of attacks from fake voices to more serious images and videos directly target humans – the most vulnerable link in the cybersecurity system.

To prevent the risk of online fraud, Ms. Quynh said that businesses need to build proactive defense systems and apply AI in network security to increase monitoring and early warning of abnormalities. At the same time, management agencies need to increase public-private cooperation, sharing data, experience and attack models.
