Ebrard announces investment of 1,600 million pesos for science and technology

Cuernavaca, Mor., The head of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, announced an investment of 1,600 million pesos in 2026 destined for scientific and technological innovation funds in Mexico.

The figure represents double the 800 million pesos allocated in 2025, as detailed within the framework of the STS Forum 2025, held in this city and where innovators, scientists and investment funds met.

Ebrard explained that the resources are part of a collaboration agreement with the National Financiera Fund of Funds, designed to promote high-impact projects.

The official explained that this amount will be combined with private contributions to generate a multiplier effect in the economy. The announcement was made within the framework of a forum with the participation of 5,900 attendees from 39 countries, focused on connecting scientific advances with the market.

Ebrard highlighted that for the first time three key communities met in the same space: innovators with prototypes in semiconductors, drones, health and biotechnology; scientific institutions with more than 40 public research centers; and national and international investment funds.

Among the projects presented are developments in semiconductors to reduce dependence on imports, predictive systems to measure the impact of hurricanes, hydrogen vehicles and specific pesticides based on Mexican biodiversity.

The secretary stressed the importance of these funds to improve the country’s competitiveness.

“Our economy is subordinate to the United States. So, what could or should be our main effort to improve the country’s competitiveness and improve our economic outlook year after year? Well, put more resources into innovation,” he stated.

Regarding the financial structure, Ebrard clarified that by 2025 800 million pesos will be allocated, of which 300 million have already been transferred as initial capital. “Those 300 million are the first transfer we made,” he indicated.

In 2026, the amount will rise to 1.6 billion, with equitable contributions from the Ministry of Economy and National Finance.

Regarding the inclusion of young and regional talent, Ebrard mentioned the potential of states like Morelos, where there are more than 50 innovation centers. “In this state there are more centers than in many countries in the world.”

Regarding semiconductors, a priority sector, the secretary indicated that the design, assembly and initial sale in Mexico will be financed. “What we are financing is to start production in Mexico, from design, assembly and sale,” he explained. He added that this will allow us to replace imports and scale towards more sophisticated products. The STS Forum Latam included the signing of agreements and the exhibition of prototypes.
