Accordingly, almost every second person has the economy mode activated. 41 percent say they want to save money for Christmas. On average, Austrians plan to spend 402 euros on gifts – 22 euros less than last year. On average, four people will receive gifts, also slightly fewer than in 2024. Many would focus on the inner circle. Gifts are most likely to be saved with friends. “But 42 percent don’t want to make any compromises when it comes to their own child, partner or parents,” says study leader Paul Unterhuber.

It is also clear that shopping behavior is shifting further towards online shopping: ten percent only buy their gifts online. 33 percent say they buy more gifts online, but also in brick-and-mortar stores. 13 percent stick exclusively to stationary retail.

44 percent can imagine giving or receiving second-hand gifts – half of them for cost reasons, the other half for environmental reasons. Smartphones, toys, laptops, consoles and books are particularly in demand.
