A reasonable energy price is people’s most important energy policy goal, according to the Energy Industry’s annual energy attitude survey.
After the price of energy, the most important thing is increasing energy self-sufficiency, which the respondents clearly considered the most important goal after the energy crisis in 2022. Now its popularity has fallen slightly below the price. Emission reductions and curbing climate change were mentioned third.
The changes from the previous year are minor. The price was at the top of the survey even when electricity was very affordable. The relative weight of climate policy has varied more, in the crisis year 2022 the climate claim was only the fifth most important.
“Citizens already assume that energy is clean, so they don’t want to pay more for it. Saving electricity in one’s everyday life is no longer a climate change,” says the CEO of Energiateollisuus ry Jukka Leskelä in the bulletin.
The energy crisis brought out concerns about energy sufficiency, and prices were sometimes very high. “This can still be seen in attitudes, and of course we have to continue working to ensure that the energy system is affordable and secure in the future as well,” says Leskelä.
Solar power is the most popular, nuclear power is favored by the majority
The sun is still the most popular source of energy, 82 percent of respondents would like more of it, and only four percent less than at present.
The popularity of wind power has decreased slightly. The peak years of climate awareness in 2018–20 increased its popularity, the energy crisis years 2021–23 kept it up, and the end of the energy crisis has returned support for wind power to the level of 2016.
The popularity of nuclear power was very high during the energy crisis, now it has returned to the high level before the crisis. A clear majority of supporters of all parliamentary parties have a positive attitude towards nuclear power. Support for nuclear power is more evenly distributed among different background groups than before.
Concern about the reliability of electricity supply has manifested itself as a subtle increase in the popularity of coal, but the reading is still quite low. Gas is also considered a better energy source than before, but only a few percent of respondents still use it.
Acceptability of bioenergy and hydropower still high
The popularity of bioenergy has been declining for a long time, but its acceptability is still at a high level. Only a fifth wants to reduce its use in electricity production. Support for hydropower has also decreased, but the change is minor. Only ten percent of the respondents somewhat or completely disagree with the statement that hydropower is needed to curb climate change.
On the other hand, the number of those who reduce hydropower has risen from eight to twelve percent, after being at a low of two percent in 2012. Those who increase or maintain hydropower are still the overwhelming majority, 83 percent.
The majority of respondents accept slight increases in online service fees, as long as the reliability of electricity supply can be improved and power outages reduced.
Investments in electricity networks to electrify society were considered important. About 70 percent of the respondents at least somewhat agree with the statement “It is necessary to invest in electricity networks and they must be developed to be better than the current ones, so that the electrification of society would be possible in general”.
