Long-distance transport: Deutsche Bahn’s competitor Flixtrain is significantly expanding its offering

The Deutsche Bahn competitor Flixtrain wants to gradually build around 65 new long-distance trains from the manufacturer from 2028 Talgo put on the rails. “The first trains are already in production. We are exactly on schedule,” said Flixtrain boss André Schwämmlein the German Press Agency. He left it open by when all trains should be delivered. “The ramp-up will of course take some time,” he simply said. “You don’t bring 65 new trains onto the network overnight.”

According to the company, the current Flixtrain fleet consists of 15 trains. Until the new units arrive, the company will continue to rely on modernized used vehicles. Seating capacity will roughly double within the next two years, it said. For passengers, this means an expansion of the existing long-distance transport offering. “We will be able to offer a two-hour service on the major connections,” said the manager.

The new vehicles will form the backbone of the Flix long-distance train fleet in the future. The company had the 2.4 billion euros expensive order for the new trains announced in May. It initially includes 30 new express trains with the option of 35 more. Flixtrain definitely wants to use this option.

The Berlin-Munich route is to be offered

The goal is to be the important one in the medium term Berlin-Munich route to offer services that are not currently served by Flixtrain, said Schwämmlein. “In principle, you can assume that we will offer all important connections in Germany.” Schwämmlein also left the schedule for this open.

When it comes to long-distance rail transport, Flixtrain focuses primarily on the economically strong connections between the important German companies metropolitan areas. Trains run from approximately Berlin to North Rhine-Westphalia or the southwest and between Hamburg and the German capital. If you book early, you often pay significantly less than with the German railways. But Flixtrain could also see price increases in the foreseeable future.
