The Egyptian government has announced the completion of work on laying cables connecting the country’s power grid with the power grid of Saudi Arabia.
According to Egyptian Energy Minister Mahmoud Ismat, the first phase, with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, will be commissioned in the first week of January 2026, the second, which will bring the total capacity to 3,000 megawatts, will be launched a few months later.
Official sources confirm that phased load testing of the project is currently underway.
The commissioning of the international cable will improve the stability of the energy systems of both countries during peak periods.
The Egypt-Saudi Energy Bridge is the largest interconnection project in the Middle East with a total cost of approximately $1.8 billion. It stretches over 1,350 km and includes an underwater section through the Gulf of Aqaba.
