Wärtsilä sells a 300 million euro chunk to a private equity investor

From their engines the well-known Wärtsilä sells its Gas solutions unit, which focuses on gas solutions, to the German venture capitalist Mutares.

The Gas solutions unit specializes in marine gas processing and liquefaction and biogas solutions.

The unit had a turnover of 300 million euros in 2024. Wärtsilä does not disclose the purchase price. Wärtsilä believes that the deal will be completed in the first half of 2026.

In recent years, gas solutions have played a secondary role in Wärtsilä’s strategy. Wärtsilä has recently sold other of its junks. A year ago, the company said it was selling the technologies of navigation and automation systems. Last summer, a unit specializing in electrical system integrations went up for sale.

Wärtsilä previously also considered selling the energy storage business, which has been a reasonably significant activity for Wärtsilä. However, after much deliberation, Wärtsilä finally decided to keep the unit itself.

On the stock exchange, Wärtsilä’s share price opened up by about one percent on Monday after the announcement.

Wärtsilä has been one of the strongest stocks on the Helsinki Stock Exchange this year. The company’s share price has risen by more than 70 percent during the year and is at record highs.

Investors believe that Wärtsilä will benefit from large data center investments. Several data centers have purchased Wärtsilä generators for their power sources. In addition to data centers, Wärtsilä’s prospects have also brightened in the shipping market.
