Nicky Hayen starts ambitiously at KRC Genk and looks forward to seeing Club Brugge again: “I don’t feel like hiding”

“I want to win as much as possible, continue to develop as many boys as possible and ensure that the club can continue to grow financially,” says the new T1. “You always have to be able to see through the results and you don’t always have that on order. But it starts with hard work, with the right mentality and with the right intensity. Being on the field starts with the training sessions. That’s where it starts. That means winning match number one.”

“Not an ounce of revenge against Club Brugge”

And that first match is against Hayen’s ex-club and players he knows inside and out. “We discussed together what the best option was. I also indicated that I do not feel like hiding. I know that I only have two real days to prepare for that match. So no, I am not going to hide from that match. We came to the conclusion together that it was best for this group to stand on the sidelines and that is what we are going to do,” the Limburger clarified.

“I have absolutely no feelings of revenge towards Club Brugge. I am not wired like that. I look back with great pleasure on the eighteen months I experienced there. On the one hand, I am very grateful for what I was able to experience there, but on the other hand, I also know what I have proven at Club Brugge. The results speak for themselves. But the very last thing I am looking for is recognition. You don’t work alone. You work for a club. For the players, for the coaching staff. I view it as a team thing. We all do it together.”

Dimitri de Condé: “Ideal man for us as a club”

The conversations between Hayen and KRC Genk went very smoothly, after Thorsten Fink was kicked out of the Limburgers last week. “In recent days I have received many messages from the football community and from players, trainers and external parties that Nicky is the right man in the right place,” said Head of Football Dimitri De Condé on Tuesday during Hayen’s press presentation. “The fact that Nicky did a great job in Bruges and had to deal with a disappointment grabbed me by the throat. He said that he wanted to put his passion into the club and that he saw a club with a lot of room for growth. That, in combination with the very first conversation we had, are for me the main reasons why he is the ideal man for us as a club. We also had in-depth conversations about what we need to do better and how he can help us with that.”

The technical staff will be further shaped in mutual consultation in the coming weeks, with a view to providing maximum support for the playing group and achieving the proposed sporting objectives. “Nicky has proven to be a true professional in managing a technical staff and leading a group of players,” the club said. “He knows our competition and what it is like to compete for prizes. That winning mentality fits perfectly with our club’s plans.”
