Used cars are particularly expensive in Austria

In Austria, a used car cost an average of 29,505 euros this year. Compared to 2024 (29,543 euros), this corresponds to a minimal decrease of 0.1 percent. Across Europe, the average used car price in 2025 was 25,500 euros.

Austria’s fuel prices are in the middle of the EU

Fuel prices in Austria have fallen on average for the third year in a row. In an EU comparison, Austria is in the middle of the EU with 1.54 euros per liter for diesel and 1.52 euros per liter for Eurosuper, according to the fuel price balance of the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) for this year. The highest fuel prices were in Denmark, while drivers paid significantly less in Bulgaria and Malta.

For Eurosuper, drivers in this country had to pay 1.52 euros, 5 cents per liter less than in the previous year. The diesel price fell by 6 cents to 1.54 euros compared to the previous year. Drivers in Denmark, on the other hand, had to dig significantly deeper into their pockets: there, a liter of Eurosuper cost 1.96 euros per liter. But filling up a tank also cost significantly more in the Netherlands (1.92 euros), Greece (1.76 euros) as well as in Germany and Ireland (1.73 euros each) than in Austria. The situation with diesel is not much different: in Denmark it cost 1.76 euros per liter and in Ireland 1.71 euros. But fuel also cost significantly more in the Netherlands (1.69 euros), Belgium (1.66 euros) and Italy (1.65 euros).

Low prices

Drivers in Bulgaria, Malta and Cyprus got off cheaper. In Bulgaria, a liter of Eurosuper cost 1.24 euros. In the island states of Malta and Cyprus, not much more was charged for this fuel. It’s similar with diesel: Malta took the top spot with a liter price of 1.21 euros, followed by Bulgaria with 1.24 euros.

However, there is also an opportunity in Austria to reduce fuel costs, said the VCÖ: If you adapt your driving behavior, drive proactively and evenly, you can reduce fuel consumption – and thus also fuel costs – by 15 to 20 percent.
