Mathias Delorge (AA Gent) underwent surgery due to an ankle injury, Zulte Waregem retains revelation Jeppe Erenbjerg for longer

GENK. The Wannemacker extends

KRC Genk has retained one of its goldcrests for longer. Midfielder August De Wannemacker signs a new agreement for three seasons, the maximum duration allowed for an underage player. “This is the team where I want to break into the first team – via Jong Genk”

De Wannemacker will be stationed in Limburg until the summer of 2028. At the beginning of July 2022, the Ghent native moved from the youth of AA Gent to KRC Genk. Since then, the 16-year-old midfielder has been regarded as one of the club’s greatest talents. This season, De Wannemacker is a regular at Jong Genk in the Challenger Pro League. He managed to add three assists in 14 games. He also showed his potential with the national U17 team.
De Wannemacker himself is satisfied with his contract extension. “I came to KRC Genk because for me it is simply the best football academy in the country,” he says in a press release from the club. “I have experienced this myself in recent years. This is also the team where I want to break into the first team – via Jong Genk. Physically I want to continue to take steps and I also want to continue to develop both my strengths and weaknesses.”

Stijn Haeldermans, Technical Coordinator at KRC Genk, is also delighted. “August is an attacking midfielder who can also play in the 8. After all, he adds value to his team both offensively and defensively. He combines this with an enormous drive and winning mentality. This combination makes him the personification of our training philosophy.”
