Sales in supermarkets grew 2.7% in October, the largest increase since May

In October, the total supermarket sales index at constant prices had an increase of 2.7% compared to the same month in 2024 and an increase of 1.6% compared to the previous month. The accumulated January-October 2025 presents a positive variation of 2.7% compared to the same period last year.

October’s results are the best in comparison with the previous month since the January record, when they had risen 1.7%. And in the interannual measurement we have to go back to May – when they jumped 6.1% – to find better data.

As reported by INDEC, total sales at current prices – taking into account the effect of inflation – surveyed in the Supermarket Survey, totaled 2,170,974.2 million pesos, which represents an increase of 27.8%, compared to the same month of the previous year. The percentage is below the interannual inflation of October, which was 31.3%.

In total sales at current prices, during October 2025, the groups of items with the most significant increases in sales, according to their interannual variation, were: “Meats”, with 51.8%; “Others“, with 39.8%; “Prepared foods and rotisseries”, with 39.7%; and “Clothing, footwear and home textiles”, with 36.7%.

In October 2025, sales at current prices made in cash were 350,542,121 thousand pesos, which represents the 16.1% of total sales and shows an increase of 24.9% compared to the same month of the previous year. For their part, those carried out by debit card were 559,820,284 thousand pesos, 25.8% of the operations and a positive variation of 25.1%.

Sales paid by credit card totaled 975,598,862 thousand pesos, which represents 44.9% of total sales and an increase of 24.0% in 2024. Finally, those made through other means of payment amounted to 285,012,948 thousand pesos, which represents 13.1% of the total and shows an increase of 55.6% compared to the same month of the previous year.
