KP: Finland’s largest electricity storage facility is being built in Northern Ostrobothnia – 250 MWh, 15 buildings and 7,000 square meters

Finland’s largest electricity storage facility is currently being built in Haapajärvi in ​​Northern Ostrobothnia, says the provincial newspaper Keskipohjanmaa.

With its capacity of 250 megawatt hours and 125 megawatts, the electricity storage is the largest battery storage in the country to date. The power corresponds to a large wind turbine and would temporarily cover, for example, the electricity needs of tens of thousands of households.

A storage area consisting of lithium battery modules is being built by the grid company Fingrid’s next to the national transformer station. A total of 15 warehouse buildings will be built in the area, each of which has an area of ​​approximately 500 square meters. The construction site is therefore approximately 7,000 square meters in size, says Keskipohjanmaa.

The electricity storage is supposed to be commissioned in 2027. The main contractor for the construction phase is from Vaasa Nordic Electro Power.

The developer and future owner of the warehouse is a Swiss energy group Alps. The company is also behind the electricity storage that started in Valkeakoski in November. The power of Valkeakoski’s electricity storage is 30 megawatts and the capacity is 36 megawatt hours.

The purpose of electricity storage is to improve the network’s immunity to disturbances as the share of renewable energy, such as wind power, in production increases. In addition, the storages can even out the fluctuation of the electricity price. From the point of view of energy companies, electricity storage can generate income when electricity is stored at cheap times and sold at more expensive times.
