The giant order was confirmed: two icebreakers will be built in Rauma

Rauma the owner of the shipyard, Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC), and the US Coast Guard have signed a contract for the construction of two medium-sized icebreakers at the Rauma shipyard.

The United States and Finland reached an agreement on the order of a total of eleven icebreakers already in October. At the time, it was reported that four of the icebreakers would be manufactured in Finland – two at the Helsinki shipyard and two at the Rauma shipyard – and the rest in the United States.

The contract for the construction of two icebreakers has now been officially signed.

The icebreakers will be built at the Rauma shipyard and will be completed in 2028.

“We got this significant deal because we have the know-how and ability to make the ships in the required time. Due to the fast delivery time, we are the most affordable option on the market,” says RMC’s CEO in the press release Mika Nieminen.

The ships will be built in cooperation with the American shipyard, Bollinger Shipyards.

Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Park (ps) describes in the press release that the order strengthens the position of Finnish companies in the global value chain, increases Finland’s competitiveness and increases export revenues.

“Finnish shipyards build the world’s best icebreakers and largest cruise ships. Confirmation of an icebreaker order for the RMC shipyard is an excellent thing for Finland and our entire maritime industry,” says Puisto.
