Announcement of jobs in the US brings down the dollar, although it recovers

Caution settled in the stock markets, as risk appetite cooled amid US employment data and US plans for Venezuelan oil.

After learning that 41 thousand jobs were created in the United States in December, less than expected by the market consensus of 50 thousand, and after 29 thousand jobs were lost in November, the dollar fell, although it reversed the initial decline and strengthened at the close of the day; meanwhile, the commodities (metals and oil) were down.

After the advance of the greenback, the Mexican peso closed almost at the same level as Tuesday, with a marginal appreciation of 0.03 percent, to 17.9666 pesos per dollar spot.

According to the Bank of Mexico, the exchange rate operated between a maximum of 17.98000 units and a minimum of 17.9400 in the wholesale market, pending inflation data from Mexico in 2025.

Meanwhile, the DXY index, which measures the behavior of the dollar against a group of six currencies, advanced 0.18 percent this Wednesday, to 98,490 units.

Meanwhile, stock markets stopped their winning streak. The Nasdaq was able to overcome the barrier of falls, rising 0.16 percent, to 23,584.28 units. However, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones could not weather the declines and lost 0.34 and 0.94 percent, respectively, as investors await the December 2025 nonfarm payrolls report tomorrow.

The doses of greater caution reached technology companies, the driving force of the advances in the first days of the year, while Tesla fell 0.36 percent, Nvidia rose 1.07, Amazon 0.29 and Netflix 0.07 percent.

Shares of oil companies such as Exxon Mobil fell 2.12 percent and Chevron, 0.86.

US markets traded lower, which accentuated the contractions after Trump’s announcements on new trade measures for private equity companies involved in the purchase of homes in the United States and the aerospace and defense industry.

The Price and Quotations Index of the Mexican Stock Exchange closed at 64,871.70 units, 0.23 percent less than the previous session. The main Mexican stock index was affected by the fall in Cemex shares, 2.81 percent; Grupo México, 1.68, and Peñoles, 1.96, due to the fall in metals.

Oil prices continued to decline due to new announcements from the White House about the future of the exploitation of Venezuela’s reserves.

The price of North Sea Brent, for delivery in March, lost 1.22 percent, to $59.96. Its US equivalent, West Texas Intermediate for February delivery, fell 2 percent to 55.99.

Trump assured that Caracas will deliver to the United States “between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil,” which will “be sold at market prices.”

The safe haven asset par excellence, gold, closed the session with a drop of 0.78 percent, to 4,459 dollars per ounce, the metal showed a downward correction after three consecutive sessions of gains and reaching a maximum of 4,500 dollars per ounce.
