Empty egg shelves in supermarkets: the Minister of Agriculture deplores “too restrictive regulations”

The egg aisles of several supermarkets have been sparse, even downright empty, in recent days. A shortage due to delivery difficulties caused by snow, but not only that. The French are consuming more and more of this “cheap protein” but it is sometimes difficult to find it and for good reason, “we do not produce enough”, explains the Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard, guest of BFMTV-RMC this Monday morning.

The current situation is “very symptomatic of the egg crisis”, she declared, pointing out the lack of facilities in our territory. “It’s too complicated today to install livestock buildings and chicken coops,” she points out. “Today, the regulations on henhouses are as if it were a sensitive industry,” continues Annie Genevard, who assures that “France makes life complicated for farmers.”

Towards regulatory relief

“The regulations are too restrictive,” breathes the Minister of Agriculture. For this, “the Duplomb law will allow, once it is perfectly applied, to be able to remove some of the obstacles weighing on the installation of livestock buildings”.

But “the French must also accept that we produce chicken coops”, estimates Annie Genevard, who explains that at the moment, “four chicken coop projects are being rejected because the French no longer want to see livestock buildings”. “Some of them, who know little about the subject, consider that it is a place where animals are mistreated,” judges the minister.

“It has become a problem with a profound handicap” and “we must provide solutions,” concludes the minister.
