The enchantment of Silvesterklaus: mysterious figures move through snow-covered villages in Switzerland

They gather in the early morning on the village square, to visit farms and houses in small groups. Participants make a circle, ring their bells and yodel, and in return they receive some money or a hot drink. With their impressive costumes, heavy bells and enchanting singing, they not only bring good wishes, but also a piece of living history.

The origins of Silvesterklaus go back to the seventeenth century. The practice was first mentioned in writing in 1663, when church authorities protested against noisy, masked groups going around. The festival initially took place during Advent, but over the centuries it was moved to New Year’s Eve.
