The year 2025 is recorded as the third hottest year in history since statistics, raising the average temperature of the past three years to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.
According to data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the average Earth temperature in 2025 remains high, making the last three years the hottest in history since the time of data recording.
ECMWF is a center under the European Union, which began recording data on the Earth’s average temperature in 1850. The above results match data from the UK Met Office, Britain’s national meteorological agency.
Also according to this organization, the planet’s three-year average temperature was recorded to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times. In terms of years, the Earth passed the upper threshold in 2024.

Limiting the Earth to 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial times is the goal set in the Paris Agreement, to prevent the climate crisis. According to scientists, staying above this threshold for a long time leads to extreme weather phenomena such as prolonged heat and stronger storms and floods. This situation increases the number of deaths and also affects biodiversity when ice melts, leading to rising sea levels.
The 1.5 degree Celsius milestone in the Paris Agreement was agreed to be measured in decade-long average temperatures. According to this measurement, the global temperature increase is 1.4 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.
However, countries have not been able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as committed 10 years ago, leading to a situation where the Earth’s temperature per decade could exceed the threshold before 2030. According to ECMWF, this milestone is a decade earlier than scientists predicted at the time of signing the Paris Agreement in 2015.
Mr. Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Monitoring Agency, said the situation of global warming exceeding the safe threshold is inevitable. “The only option we have is to find ways to keep the temperature rise as low as possible and minimize its consequences on natural ecosystems and society,” he said.

In Europe alone, last year’s forest fires generated the highest total emissions in history. Meanwhile in Asia and the US, more extreme weather events due to climate change have killed more than 1,000 people in floods.
Scientists believe that climate change is mainly caused by humans and is becoming increasingly serious. The main cause is greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, causing heat retention in the atmosphere.
As the impacts of climate change worsen, this science is facing growing political opposition. US President Donald Trump, who has called climate change “the biggest hoax”, withdrew from 66 United Nations organizations last week, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
