OpenAI challenges Google and Deepl, ChatGPT Translate arrives. The differences

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Translate a web translation tool that supports over 50 languages ​​and bills itself as direct competitor of Google Translate or Deepl. Visually the services are very similar: both have two text boxes, one for typing or pasting the source content and another showing the translation, with drop-down menus to choose the source and destination languages.

However, there are significant differences

Google Translate allows you to upload images, documents and even websites to translate, in addition to the classic text insertion. ChatGPT Translate’s homepage indicates that the service can translate from text, images, and voice, but at the moment the Image support is not yet available in any version.

On the desktop site you can only translate from text while on mobile browsers, however, you can use both text and the device’s microphone. The OpenAI service also includes some presets to guide the translation style, for example “translate and make the text more formal in a business context” or “translate as if you were explaining it to a child” or “make it formal and professional”.

The ChatGPT chatbot has actually offered translation functions for years but here OpenAI has decided to offer a separate and dedicated service. For now, the American media write, there is no sign of a ChatGPT Translate app on the Apple or Google stores, unlike Google Translate, available both via the web and as an app. OpenAI hasn’t officially announced the release, there’s no blog post yet, and it hasn’t confirmed which AI model is powering the tool.
