The electricity in Bornholm, Denmark was cut off – The fault is related to the sea cable

The electricity is out on the entire island of Bornholm, Danish media reports.

According to the Danish news agency Ritzau, the fault is related to the submarine cable that runs from mainland Sweden to the Danish island. The alarm about the fault came at 10:16 local time.

The energy company Trefor El-Net Øst says the public broadcasting company DR:shethat it seems to be an overload of the sea cable. The cable itself is intact. The company does not suspect sabotage.

The Bornholm police are investigating the matter, but will not comment further on the case for the time being.

The power outage affects at least 18,572 households. Disturbances can also occur in water distribution, heating and telecommunication connections. Power is not expected to return to the island until late Wednesday evening.

Locals have been advised to collect water and keep flashlights or candles handy. Bornholm Hospital continues to operate with the help of a generator.

About 40,000 people live in Bornholm. The island is located in the Baltic Sea between Sweden’s Skåne and Poland’s Pomeranian coast. Bornholm was prominently in the headlines in the fall of 2022, when explosions were detected in the Nord Stream gas pipelines just off the island.
