‘Boom’ in Denmark of apps that boycott American products

In Denmark more and more people are relying on app to understand what really ends up in the cart and, if possible, avoid American products. It is a reaction to the *disputes* between the US president Donald Trump and the Danish government on the hypothesis of “acquiring” the Greenland territory under Danish sovereignty.

What is driving the phenomenon, writes Euronews, are above all two things applications which allow you to recognize ‘made in USA’ goods and make suggestions alternatives produced elsewhereoften local. The result was a jump in the rankings: UdenUSA (in English “NonUSA”) reached the top of the Danish App Store, even ahead of ChatGPT. The app allows you to scan the products to verify the country of origin, it offers non-US alternatives and allows you to add them directly to a cart. The developers, however, are keen to point out that the goal is not to “organise a boycott”, but to offer more clarity to consumers. “It’s up to people to decide what to do with it,” Jonas Pipper, one of the app’s creators, told public broadcaster DR Nyheder.

Made O’Meter and the real economic impact

It is also among the most downloaded apps Made O’Meterwhich these days appears around fifth place in the Danish ranking. Again, the app is used to estimate how “American” a product, company or service actually is. However, experts urge caution regarding the real impact: moles Danish supermarkets the presence of products directly imported from the United States is limited.

According to Louise Aggerstrøm Hansen, economist at Danske Bank, again quoted by Euronews, only about1% of Danish food consumption comes directly from the USA, a fact that also makes it difficult to measure the effects of a possible one boycott. On a psychological level, however, the mechanism could still work. Apps, some researchers observe, give people the impression that they can “do something.”

The Greenland question and the protests

Since the beginning of January Trump he repeated several times an idea already floated in the past, that of a possible acquisition of Greenland and now, after the speech in Davos and the meeting with Rutte, he seems to have obtained what he was looking for (protection of the island and mineral concessions). Last week, thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark and Greenland for protest against any hypothesis of takeover americano of the Arctic island.
