US President Donald Trump threatened today (Saturday) that he will impose a 100% tariff on all imports from Canada if Ottawa signs a trade agreement with China. “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately absorb a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the US,” the president wrote in a post on the Truth Social network, in which he warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney against Canada becoming a “port unloading” for Chinese goods en route to the US, and claimed that China would try to use Canada to circumvent US tariffs.
Trump even intensified the rhetoric towards the Prime Minister of Canada whom he called for the first time, “governor”. The president wrote that “China will eat Canada alive” and harm its business and fabric of life if it comes close to an agreement with Beijing.

The threat comes amid reports that Canada and China have reached preliminary understandings to remove trade barriers and reduce tariffs. Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced that “when Canada-China relations are at their best, they have created enormous opportunities for both nations.”
According to the emerging understandings, China has agreed to reduce tariffs on some Canadian agricultural products. At the same time, Canada agreed to allow limited imports of electric vehicles from China, which will be subject to a 6.1% tariff.
Trump changed his conciliatory position
It should be noted that Trump’s harsh rhetoric comes against the background of the president’s more conciliatory position than just a week ago. The president told the media at the White House that he supports Canada’s move against China and said: “This is what he should do… If you can reach a deal with China, you should do it.”
So why did the president change his position? Recall that a day ago Trump withdrew his invitation from Canada, which agreed to join the President’s Peace Council in Gaza. Carney said just this week that he is ready to join the council.
