“Without unity, the EU is weak” – Kallas’ words reveal what is really feared in Brussels

Of the High Representative of the EU’s foreign and security policy Kaja Kallaksen according to the year 2026 is defined by unpredictability.

Kallas emphasized at the press conference after the foreign ministers’ meeting held in Brussels on Thursday that without unity the EU is weak and can be pushed around.

The most significant of the concrete results of the meeting was that the foreign ministers decided to add Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to the list of terrorist organizations. The justification is the participation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the violent suppression of citizens’ protests.

In relation to Iran, the United States also considers military options on the table to calm the situation. Kallas said on Thursday in Brussels that the region does not need another war.

Russian sanctions

According to Kallas, Russia does not seem willing for peace, but continues its destructive missile attacks on Ukraine. In recent days, they have targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in particular.

Kallas said that the EU aims to increase pressure measures against Russia and to complete the 20th sanctions package by the anniversary of the war, i.e. by February 24.

Finland and Sweden are pushing for a full maritime service ban for all ships carrying Russian fossil energy in the EU’s 20th sanctions package. The countries also demand additional measures against the ships of the Russian shadow fleet.

They would also like the tightening of fertilizer import quotas and a complete ban on the export of luxury products to be added to the banned list.

Kallas said on Thursday that an agreement on Russia sanctions has not yet been reached.

“I can’t say that we already have an agreement, but we did a lot today and we will continue to work,” Kallas said.
