Skilled workers of tomorrow: Why teaching will continue to be important in the future

Around 38 percent of all young people choose to become an apprentice Training path – Trend slightly falling. The number of companies that train apprentices is also falling slightly. In economically weak times there are fewer jobs for young people.

Around 27,000 establishments the picture Apprentices and thus ensure that the skilled workers of tomorrow actually exist. The commitment of large companies, but also many medium-sized and small companies, must be upheld: the training of young people is subject to strict rules and bureaucratic requirements. It’s not easy to have apprentices; they initially cost the company more than they bring in. And there is no guarantee that the fully trained apprentice, the skilled worker, will later stay in the company.

Interest groups regularly promote teaching – there are good reasons for this. The practical training model in the companies teaches young people how to work and gives them the tools for their professional careers. Apprenticeships have always been a model of success for Austria.

Die demographic developmentg the next ten years sees a skills gap. More than half a million workers could be missing. If skilled worker training is neglected now, it will have serious consequences in the future – for companies and for young people.
