The Knesset must decide on Smotrich’s decree on expanding tax-free imports by February 23

Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana is required to hold a discussion and vote on repealing the decree doubling the VAT exemption ceiling on personal imports by February 23.

The notice was sent to Ohana by Knesset Legal Adviser Sagit Afik after members of the Knesset Finance Committee voted to submit the decree to the Knesset plenary session for discussion.

Let us recall that at the end of December 2025, Smotrich signed a decree that doubled the ceiling for VAT exemption on personal imports from $75 to $150. The decree, which came into force on December 24, does not require approval from the Knesset, but the Knesset has the power to revoke it. The vote must be held within 60 days from the date the decree enters into force.
