The electric car market may collapse – The reason is the EU’s plan for combustion engine cars

The campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E), which is active in the EU, warns that the easing of the ban on the sale of combustion engine cars planned by the Union may lead to drastic changes in the car trade.

According to T&E, the share of electric cars in the sales of new cars and vans will most likely be 85 percent from 2035 onwards, if the EU’s planning goes ahead.

On the other hand, according to the organization’s calculations, the share can drop to as much as 50 percent.

The EU decided to propose in December, due to pressure from car manufacturers, according to T&E, a 90 percent cut in permitted carbon dioxide emissions by 2035. The starting level in the calculations is the level of 2021.

Originally, the drop in carbon dioxide emissions by 2035 should have been 100 percent.

T&E criticizes the EU’s withdrawal and emphasizes that the Union should not allow the sale of high-emission combustion engine cars at the same time as Chinese manufacturers are rapidly developing fully electric cars.

Savings in product development costs

The European Commission, which dealt with the matter, estimated at the end of last year that the plan to relax the rule would eventually support the sale of electric cars in the EU.

The savings for car manufacturers would be 2.1 billion euros over three years. It would free up product development money for the development and innovation of fully electric cars in the future.
