Aeroméxico hopes to soon reopen routes to the United States

Aeroméxico expects that the routes from Mexico to the United States that the United States Department of Transportation (DoT) canceled last October will be reopened mainly to increase the number of current destinations, Andrés Conesa, CEO of the company, stated this morning.

“We hope to have good news there soon, which will allow us to return to those flights and also allow us to grow in AICM destinations to the United States, because today we cannot do it,” he commented in a conference about the recognition that Aeroméxico obtained for the second consecutive year for being the most punctual airline in the world, according to the ranking global about Cerium.

“This year we are doing well because we deployed an enormous number of flights to the United States last year, but it is something that undoubtedly has to be corrected, that is, we cannot be permanently without adding more capacity to the metropolitan area in the United States, but I believe it will be achieved.”

He explained that after the DoT order to close routes from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to the United States, Aeroméxico had to cancel flights to McAllen, Houston and Puerto Rico.

Last September, Aeroméxico celebrated 91 years of operation amidst the effects of DoT decisions that also ordered the dissolution of the alliance that the company had with Delta for more than 20 years.

“It is not an issue against Aeroméxico, or against Delta, it is an issue where the culture of the United States government says that the Mexican government has failed to comply with the bilateral agreement; from what I understand, it is an issue between the two authorities, and that there has been very good progress in the talks.

“Particularly regarding the departure of cargoes from AICM to AIFA, there has been good progress.”

Andrés Conesa highlighted that building a third terminal at the AICM would represent a complement to the metropolitan airport system, which would provide capacity for 100 million passengers in one year.

“A third terminal would be very good for users, for the city, for the country, for the airport itself and complements the metropolitan airport system very well,” he said.
