In an interview, after participating in the 1st Clean Firm Power Latam Summit forum, Diana León, energy director at the Ministry of Economy (SE), pointed out that of the 406 billion dollar investment recently announced by Marcelo Ebrard, nearly 200 thousand correspond to 30 energy projects, including renewables and hydrocarbons.

He specified that all these foreign direct investment (FDI) plans, which are included in the portfolio, have been endorsed by the Ministry of Energy (Sener) and involve French, Canadian and American capital.

In her participation, Ana María Gómez, general director of renewable energies at Sener, commented that since last year the agency has launched various activities to establish new regulatory frameworks and actions that allow covering the demand for electrical energy.

He noted that the vision of the current federal administration is to generate more clean energy to satisfy the projected demand of more than 25 gigawatts by 2039, with a growth of 43 percent in the planning scenario.

He explained that this growth is mainly due to medium-sized companies, data centers and electromobility.

The Sener official pointed out that to achieve this, a reliable and firm electricity supply is needed, but without failing to consider the prevalence of the State with a percentage of at least 54 percent in generation.

He recalled that he has made calls for binding planning with renewable energy projects and last week the new guidelines for mixed contracts between private companies and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) were opened.

He stressed that firm capacity is necessary with all the technology in the sector, but also recognized that Mexico has a historical base of firm and clean capacity, with hydroelectric and geothermal energy. In addition, it also has other technologies with firm capacity and great renewable energy potential, which gives the country a competitive advantage.

He recalled that for renewables, storage is necessary, since they are intermittent sources. This, he said, will allow renewable energies, which have been developed in Mexico for years and have been detonated in the last year, to be firm or have part of the firm generation in the energy matrix.
