Bank of Italy, in 2025 the debt will rise to 3,095.5 billion

As of 31 December 2025, the public administration debt was equal to 3,095.5 billion; at the end of 2024 it amounted to 2,966.9 billion. Bank of Italy takes it over.
The increase in debt compared to the previous year reflected the needs of the public administrations (109.2 billion), the increase in the Treasury’s liquid assets (14.7 billion, to 52.4) and the overall effect of the spreads and premiums on issuance and reimbursement, the revaluation of inflation-indexed securities and the change in the exchange rate (4.6 billion).

With reference to the breakdown by subsectors, the consolidated debt of the central administrations grew by 132.0 billion, to 3,016.3, while that of the local administrations decreased by 3.4 billion, to 79.1; the debt of social security institutions remained substantially stable.
The average residual life of the debt was in line with that of the end of 2024 (7.9 years).
During 2025, the share of debt held by the Bank of Italy decreased, reaching 18.5 percent, from 21.6 at the end of the previous year.
