Germany seeks to make China its strategic ally

Berlin. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would seek “strategic alliances” with China during a trip next week as he aims to discuss future cooperation between Europe and the world’s second-largest economy as the United States bases its trade policy on tariffs. “We have a strategic interest in finding partners in the world who think and act like us,” he said. Merz stated that foreign policy and economic policy can no longer be separated. “If they think tariffs are more important than domestic taxes, that’s something they can of course decide for themselves. But it’s not our policy,” Merz said.
