Public prosecutor asks to charge seven people with intentional killing of far-right militant (23) in France

Dran announced that of the eleven people arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday, the three men and one woman suspected of “hiding a fugitive” have been released.

“The seven other people are currently being brought before the public prosecutor’s office,” he added. The public prosecutor’s office has requested an indictment for intentional killing and their pre-trial detention. All people involved would deny their intent to kill.

According to the public prosecutor, several people still need to be identified.

23-year-old student Quentin Deranque succumbed on Saturday to injuries he sustained during a demonstration on Thursday. He was beaten up by at least six masked people. The young man had to take care of security during an action by the feminist and extreme right-wing Collectif Némésis, against the arrival of LFI MEP Rima Hassan to the University of Lyon.

Political unrest

The death of the 23-year-old student has been much discussed in French politics. It once again sharpens the relationship between the extreme right and the extreme left. President Macron called for calm and to “remember the principles of the French republic.” He thus focused on “extreme left and extreme right movements that sometimes also have militants in their ranks who justify violence.”
