The Israeli defense concern Aviation Industry (IAI) handed over to the German Navy the BlueWhale autonomous submarine, developed jointly with the German company Atlas, a subsidiary of the ThyssenKrupp concern.
The ceremony, which was attended by representatives of the German Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr Navy, took place on February 25 at the Eckernförde naval base near Kiel. In a statement, IAI noted that this is a milestone in the development of autonomous underwater systems.
“The BlueWhale weapon system was developed to assist the German fleet in the fight against enemy submarines and conduct secret operations. It was tested in the Baltic Sea, one of the most difficult theaters in which the German Navy operates,” the concern said in a statement.
The boat is equipped with radars, sonars and electro-optical systems, allowing it to recognize sea and coastal targets, including enemy submarines, collect intelligence information, and determine the location of mines.
The BlueWhale is 10.9 meters long and weighs five and a half tons. The unmanned boat is capable of diving to depths of up to 300 meters and remaining at sea for several weeks. It will provide significant assistance in ensuring the security of communications and pipelines in the Baltic.
