The growth of the Mexican economy in 2025 was “modest, below what we need, below what we require and want,” acknowledged the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Édgar Amador Zamora, during the presentation of the Innovation Driving platform.

On Monday, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that 2025 growth was 0.8 percent real in seasonally adjusted figures, with the industrial sector as the main drag. In fact, secondary activities fell 1.1 percent, while primary activities advanced 4 percent and services, 1.5 percent.

The Secretary of the Treasury maintained that although the behavior of the gross domestic product (GDP) last year did not meet expectations, the agency in charge estimated that it would advance between 0.5 to 1.5 percent, so the “ominous forecasts” were not met either. At the beginning of 2025, some international financial organizations even predicted a contraction of the economy, given the trade uncertainty.

During the presentation of Impulsora de Innovación – a project launched by Fondo de Fondos, Nacional Financiera and National Bank for Foreign Trade – the secretary assured that, despite the weakness of the economy, “the tremendous capacity of the industrial sector to be the main trading partner of the United States, both as buyer and seller” was demonstrated.

However, for every dollar that Mexico sells abroad, only 51 cents are of value created in the country and the rest is provided by imports of intermediate goods, explained Amador Zamora.

In contrast, in Southeast Asian countries, 83 cents of every dollar of exports are generated in those countries. The purpose of Plan Mexico is to raise the proportion of national content to at least 61 cents, which in the long term would give a boost of 1.5 to GDP.
