“The most successful phishing yet”: watch out for this new scam that uses AI to trap people waiting for a package

Scams are becoming more and more credible. It is now possible to receive a larger-than-life photo of a package in the hands of a delivery person, stamped with their name and address, without it being real, reports Le Figaro.

“This morning, I received by SMS the most successful phishing so far: personalization with my name, my address (now sadly classic), but above all an AI image of a delivery man, holding a package with my name,” notes an Internet user on X, supporting image.

A process similar to that of the fake delivery guy scam

The procedure is the same as for the fake delivery guy scam: the victim receives an SMS reporting the impossibility of delivering a package, with an invitation to reschedule the delivery by clicking on a link. But this links to a fake site and the victim is asked to enter their bank details under the pretext of having to pay additional fees. The trap closes.

The messages are more and more credible. In addition to being free of spelling errors, they now include an image supposedly proving the existence of the package. Personalization made possible thanks to numerous data leaks in recent years.

Certain details can still alert the recipients of a package, such as an incomplete or inconsistent label. Other advice: do not respond or click on the link that appears in the message and go directly to the merchant or carrier’s website to check the route of the package.
